Utica Community Schools issued the following announcement on Dec 10.

Everything was on the table as high school students sat down with Board of Education members and district administration to talk about their school experiences.

Held just days after the Oxford tragedy, much of the conversation between students and Board members centered on support for student’s mental health.

Sophia Meguid, a Utica High School senior, spoke of her school’s efforts and the formation of a student committee created by the “dire need” for support at the pandemic’s start – a measure she encouraged for all schools.

“I am entirely a product of a UCS education,” she said. “I have witnessed the major advancements that can be made when concern meets care, and care meets effort.”

Board of Education president Dr. Mary Thomas called the exchange with students “one of my favorite events.”

She told students: “We want to know what’s going well and we want to know what areas we can improve. You guys are living it day to day.”

Board members met with rotating, small groups of students during the two-hour discussion Tuesday in the Utica High School media center. The discussions featured a representative group of students from all four comprehensive high schools, the Utica Alternative Learning Center, and the Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies.

Superintendent of Schools Robert Monroe said that the discussions have regularly led to direct action on new programs, course improvements and facility upgrades.

“It is important that we continue a thoughtful conversation to get student input,” Monroe said.
