Bemis Junior High School issued the following announcement on Oct 29.
Utica Community Schools is inviting community members to put themselves in the driver seat at a family fun event.
Adult guests to the November 20 family event will have an opportunity to drive a UCS school bus through the parking lot of the district’s Auxiliary Services Department, 6600 18 Mile Rd in Sterling Heights.
The event will also feature a bounce house, food truck, and a DJ. The first 75 guests who test drive the bus will receive a “I Conquered the Bus” t-shirt.
Put Yourself in the Driver’s Seat: Family Fun Bus and Bounce Event is designed to give families an afternoon of fun and recruit interested candidates for bus drivers positions in the district.
“Our work matters,” Superintendent Robert Monroe said. “This family fun event will show interested candidates how they can make a difference in our students lives by truly driving the future.”
“Many potential candidates may be initially intimated by the idea of driving a school bus”, said Brian LaPorte, Director of Safety and Management Services.
“There is no doubt that it takes a special person to be a driver, but we want to show how manageable it is to drive a bus,” he said. “If you want to make a difference, begin a rewarding career, and work with a team that cares about students and loves their work, then this job is for you.”
UCS offers prospective drivers a family-friendly work schedule and a starting wage of $21 per hour – among the highest in Macomb County. The district also offers paid training, medical, vision, dental and retirement benefits.
Transportation supervisors will be on hand at the event to answer questions and assist prospective candidates with the application process. It is not necessary to apply to test drive a bus. Guests will need to show a valid driver's license before driving the bus.
