U.S. House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said America is heading toward fascism, but State Sen. Peter Lucido (R-Shelby Township) disagrees.
"Anything she says is a little off-color to say the least," Lucido said in an interview with Shelby Review. "I can't support her speech, nor the tenor of the same."
Ocasio-Cortez was quoted as saying America was heading toward fascism in July when she was commenting on the U.S. migrant detention facilities.
"'Are we headed to fascism?' Yes. I don’t think there’s a question," the congresswoman told Yahoo News hours after she toured the detention facilities run by Customs and Border Protection. "If you actually take the time to study, and to look at the steps, and to see how government transforms under authoritarian regimes, and look at the political decisions and patterns of this president, the answer is yes."
Ocasio-Cortez has criticized President Donald Trump since she took office in January. She continually speaks out over his immigration policies. Her criticism has prompted backlash by Republican lawmakers, as well as some from her own party.
Many felt Ocasio-Cortez's comments were "trivializing Nazi concentration camps," according to a Yahoo! news story, while some felt the comparison was valid. Ocasio-Cortez believes the United States pulled its aid from needed countries and they lost their stability, causing them to leave the conditions in their countries and coming to America for refuge.
"I would respectfully debate the issue or issues that she brings because it's not fixing what is broken," Lucido said. "Essentially, it's ensuring more trouble for the American people."
