State Representative Ron Robinson (R–Utica) testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity to support an $8 million grant for the Southeast Michigan Construction Academy (SEMCA). SEMCA is a nonprofit that provides workforce training for students seeking careers in construction.

Robinson stated, “Our country is staring down the barrel of a skilled trade labor shortage. SEMCA has already proven its ability to deliver results, and this expansion would allow thousands more students to gain the training they need for good-paying careers in construction.”

SEMCA is seeking funding from the state budget to purchase, construct, renovate, and equip a new training facility in Sterling Heights. The organization currently enrolls over 750 students across its locations, with its main campus in Madison Heights at full capacity. The proposed expansion aims to address the increasing demand for skilled trades professionals in Southeast Michigan.

The requested funds would also be used for curriculum development and outreach efforts intended to attract more students into high-demand construction fields.

Robinson added, “SEMCA will help launch the careers of countless talented young people in Macomb County. This investment would directly support our community and help the next generation to find good paying jobs, buy homes, and start families right here in Southeast Michigan.”

In addition to supporting SEMCA’s request, Robinson advocated for $2 million from the state budget for the Chaldean Community Foundation’s planned “tiny home” project in Sterling Heights. This initiative seeks to provide affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for working families and individuals experiencing housing insecurity. The development will also offer residents access to health care, financial assistance, and workforce support services.

“Affordable housing is a huge priority for this legislature,” Robinson said. “This project is an opportunity to partner with a battle-tested organization who shares that same goal. This funding would help launch a community solution that’s scalable, sustainable, and sorely needed.”
