This week, a town hall was held in Washington Township to discuss M-53 road safety following a recent car crash that highlighted existing concerns. The event saw participation from law enforcement officers, MDOT officials, government officials, and local residents.
State Rep. Josh Schriver shared developments regarding infrastructure funding aimed at addressing these safety issues. "My budget allotment includes adequate funds to install guardrails and implement other traffic safety measures as deemed appropriate by transportation experts," he stated. He expressed confidence in achieving long-term solutions to reduce risks on M-53.
Rep. Schriver also discussed his bill, HB 4597, which aims to restore local control over speed limits on roads. Currently, changes in speed limits require approval from the Michigan State Police based on road studies that often lead to increased limits contrary to local preferences. "With my bill...local municipalities would be given the option to work with local residents and local law enforcement," he explained.
The bill has gained support from both Republican and Democrat state representatives across Michigan. Constituents are encouraged to contact the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for a public hearing on HB 4597.
