John James, House Representative of Michigan, said that expanding the doubled Child Tax Credit through the One Big Beautiful Bill could assist over 40 million families. These remarks were made on X.

"When President Trump first introduced the Child Tax Credit, it was a game changer for working families," said James. "Now, we have the opportunity to lock in and boost the doubled Child Tax Credit for more than 40 million families with the One Big Beautiful Bill!"

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) has undergone several expansions since its inception in 1997. The most recent changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill increased the maximum per-child credit by $200 and permanently broadened eligibility. According to the Tax Policy Center, these reforms build on a temporary 2021 expansion that made the credit fully refundable and accessible to more low-income families.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, this latest expansion will make up to 45 million U.S. families eligible for the CTC in 2025, covering nearly 70 million children. This represents one of the most significant increases in coverage in the program’s history.

The Tax Policy Center also reports that the expanded CTC under the One Big Beautiful Bill is projected to lift 3 million children out of poverty, increase household income by $90 billion over a decade, and deliver a greater anti-poverty impact than previous versions or similar benefit programs.

James is a Republican member of the U.S. House representing Michigan’s 10th District. He is a former Army helicopter pilot and business executive who was elected in 2022 with a focus on economic growth, veterans’ issues, and family tax policy, as reported by Ballotpedia.
