State Representative Ron Robinson of Utica has expressed support for a legislative plan aimed at enhancing public safety by imposing stricter penalties on individuals who flee from police. This initiative responds to a growing trend that poses risks to law enforcement officers and communities across Michigan.

The proposed legislation, House Bills 4690 and 4691, which Robinson co-sponsored, seeks to amend Michigan law by increasing the consequences for those who deliberately attempt to evade police or conservation officers during a stop. The bills propose a more severe penalty structure, introducing felony charges and mandatory prison sentences in cases where the act results in injury or death, occurs in school or construction zones, or involves repeat offenders.

“There is no excuse for endangering our citizens just to save your own skin,” Robinson stated. “We must ensure that people who break the law are held accountable, and we must send a clear message that fleeing from police will not be tolerated. I’ve worked closely with our local prosecutors on this issue, and they are passionate and supportive of this effort to protect our communities.”

Robinson further emphasized the importance of addressing such crimes: “It is not acceptable to put officers and innocent people in danger,” he said. “Crimes this serious demand more than a slap on the wrist. This plan protects our communities from reckless criminals who would selfishly endanger them.”
