State Representative Tom Kuhn of Troy has announced his support for a significant funding initiative aimed at preserving the Turtle Woods Nature Preserve. The $2.175 million grant, sourced from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, is set to facilitate Oakland County's acquisition of the land from the Troy School District. This acquisition will mark the establishment of Oakland County Parks' first nature preserve.
Rep. Kuhn expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Turtle Woods is more than just green space. It has been a peaceful, natural retreat for generations of Troy families." He emphasized its importance as a community resource where children can explore and seniors can walk amidst thriving wildlife.
The 20-acre site is located centrally within Troy and holds ecological value that residents have long appreciated. Rep. Kuhn highlighted this significance by saying, "By preserving Turtle Woods, we’re not only protecting important natural habitat, but we’re also securing a space where students, families, and future generations can connect with nature right here at home."
This preservation effort is part of House Bill 4392, which outlines $41.7 million in allocations for various land acquisitions and recreational developments across Michigan. The funding derives from revenue generated by resource leases rather than state taxpayer money.
Having passed through the Michigan House of Representatives, the bill now awaits consideration by the Senate.
