Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) CEO Paul Propson recently addressed a column in the Detroit News that questioned the Catholic Church's efforts in tackling inequality. In his response, Propson emphasized the Church's ongoing commitment to serving those in need throughout metro Detroit.

Propson acknowledged the opportunity highlighted by Bankole Thompson for the Catholic Church under Archbishop Edward Weisenburger to positively impact many lives in Detroit. He reported on CCSEM's progress in providing housing and services for the homeless. "In a few days, we will open The Residences at St. Matthew, a 46-unit apartment building which will be home to more than 60 people on the east side at Harper and Whittier," Propson stated. This development is part of several initiatives by the Archdiocese of Detroit to create affordable housing.

The Archdiocese has developed other properties into affordable housing under Archbishop Emeritus Allen Vigneron's leadership, including Transfiguration Place and Cathedral Arts Apartments. These efforts continue under Archbishop Weisenburger.

Beyond housing, CCSEM offers various forms of assistance at its Detroit Center for the Works of Mercy. This includes case management, food, clothing, and medical care through partnerships like Malta Dental and Medical Clinic.

Propson noted that numerous Catholic ministries contribute significantly to aiding Detroit's vulnerable populations. These include organizations such as St Vincent DePaul and Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Addressing comparisons made between Catholic ministries and other nonprofits like Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM), Propson expressed disappointment at any perceived division. "Certainly, the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries and all the other non-profits in Detroit should be supported and commended," he said, emphasizing collaboration among different organizations.

Propson assured that with support from Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan and other Catholic organizations, resources would continue to help improve lives in Detroit.

For those interested in supporting CCSEM or learning about leasing opportunities at The Residences at St. Matthew, further information is available on their website.
