Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) has announced the appointment of Archbishop-elect Most Rev. Edward J. Weisenburger as the next Archbishop of Detroit. The Vatican made the announcement this morning, with Pope Francis naming Weisenburger to succeed Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, who has led the Archdiocese since 2009.
Archbishop-elect Weisenburger, currently serving as the bishop of the Diocese of Tucson in Arizona, is set to bring his dedication to the Gospel and charitable service to his new role. He will also assume the position of president of CCSEM’s Board of Trustees.
"We are blessed to welcome his leadership, vision, and pastoral care as we continue our mission to bring the love and mercy of Jesus Christ to those in need throughout southeast Michigan," stated Paul Propson, CEO of Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan.
The installation ceremony for Archbishop-elect Weisenburger will take place at 2:00 p.m. on March 18, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
As preparations for this transition are underway, CCSEM expressed gratitude towards Archbishop Vigneron for his significant contributions to both Catholic Charities and the broader community during his tenure.
The episcopal motto chosen by Archbishop-elect Weisenburger is “Behold the Lamb of God,” a reference from John 1:29. The organization encourages prayers for him as he begins this new chapter in his ministry and looks forward to continuing its mission under his guidance.
