Lunch series helps Stevenson students with college admissions

It is the ultimate in a “power” lunch.

Stevenson High School is offering its students information that will give them the power of how to get into the college of their dreams by understanding the admissions process.

“We want to help Stevenson students maximize the scholarships and financial support they are getting for college,” said counselor Kristy Newell. “We want to help them learn everything they need to know to gain admission to their "best-fit" colleges.”

Newell said the lunch and learn is a natural extension of the work Stevenson counselors do to provide college information to students through classroom visits or one-on-one conferences.

For junior Leen Al Sharak, the lunches have helped her get organized on the next steps toward a career in teaching.

“I really wanted to plan ahead,” she said. “I don’t want to get to my senior year and be stressed because I don’t know what I am doing.”

Stevenson’s “Lunchtime College Series,” which began the second week of school, features topics such as transcripts, College App deadlines, fee waivers, FAFSA, the college essay, Naviance and loans and grants.

“The topics we cover address the questions that students most often have about the college application process,” Newell said. “We tried to choose topics that would help students through the hurdles they most often encounter as they apply to colleges and seek financial aid.”

Senior Losian Yaldo said the program helped him prepare to apply to Purdue for actuarial sciences.

“It really helps me prepare for after high school,” Yaldo said. “I feel a lot more confident because it helped me figure out not only the next steps, but what I need to do once I get accepted.”
