Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday that honors the Native Americans, the original inhabitants of North America, and their beautiful indigenous traditions, cultures, and lives all around the world.
Michigan has a rich history of indigenous roots, including our state's name! Michigan is derived from the Indian word Michigama, meaning great or large lake. Our state was also home to five main Indigenous Tribes: Potawatomi, Ottawa, Ojibwa/Chippewa (all 3 known as "People of the Three Fires"), Miami, and Huron.
The Sterling Heights CommUNITY Alliance invites all citizens to take a stand for, support & learn more about the indigenous people in our community.
