HYDRANT FLUSHING NOTICE
Beginning September 20, 2022, St. Clair Shores Department of Public Works will be performing hydrant flow testing throughout the city. The hydrant flushing work is scheduled to be completed on or around September 29, 2022.
The flushing process serves two purposes; it removes rust and sediment from the water lines, and it identifies hydrants in need of maintenance. To flush the system, fire hydrants are opened, and water is forced through the lines at high speed. This sudden rush of water loosens and removes accumulated rust and sediment from the lines.
Residents may temporarily notice low water pressure while the mains are being flushed in their neighborhood. Changes in water pressure increases the possibility of water main breaks occurring. To report a water main break, please contact non-emergency dispatch at 586-777-6700.
Flushing often stirs up iron deposits in the pipes which may result in brown, discolored, or rusty water in the home.
If you experience discolored water or have air in your lines, take the following steps:
Remove and clean the screens and aerators on all faucets.
Flush your pipes through the cold water side of your laundry tub, preferably the lowest faucet in the house that does not have a screen or aerator.
If you are experiencing discolored water through the hot side, you may need to drain your hot water tank.
Be sure to check the quality of the water and run the cold water faucets to clear any rust from the water lines before doing laundry. If stains from the water appear on laundered clothes, do not dry the clothes, wash the clothes again to remove the rust stains.
We appreciate your cooperation during this process. Should you have any questions please contact Valerie at 586-445-5374.
