First Ever Regional School Safety Summit

As our community prepares for the start of a new school year, the Sterling Heights Police Department convened its first ever Regional School Safety Summit today featuring school superintendents, county emergency management personnel and elected leaders from the local, regional, state and federal levels.

The goal of the summit was to continue efforts to grow and expand relationships into a robust community partnership and engagement model centered on school safety preparation, intervention, prevention, response and restoration.

During the summit, superintendents from Utica Community Schools and Warren Consolidated Schools shared their current efforts that are working well and some of the challenges and barriers they face as they work to maintain the safest environment for their educators and students. Summit participants engaged in an open discussion around how to manage school threats, the importance of active shooter training and mental health intervention as well as the benefits and challenges of various security measures. Elected leaders were called upon to discuss potential resources and funding available for school safety as well as current and proposed legislation.

“After seeing the important level of engagement that happened here today, I think it makes absolute sense for this group to continue meeting at least twice a year to provide status updates and continue discussion on current best practices to protect our students and teachers, and we’d be thrilled to continue to convene these summits right here in Sterling Heights,” said Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski.
