Insect event to teach attendees about starting a collection, types of insects found in Macomb County

Macomb County MSU Extension will host a ‘Starting Your Own Insect Collection’ event geared towards adults and older youth on Tuesday, June 28. The three-hour class, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will explore local insect types and teach attendees about collection and identification.

“From pollination to breaking down leaf litter to feeding on garden plants, insects are connected to our environment in many ways,” said David Lowenstein, an entomologist and consumer horticulture supervising extension educator for Macomb County MSU Extension. “For instance, we have pollinator species to thank for about one out of every three bites of food we consume. Insects are incredible and this event will highlight them in a number of ways.”

Lowenstein, who is an expert in identifying bees and wasps, will help lead the June 28 course. It will also feature a presentation, hands-on time learning to identify insects and an outdoor garden walk where participants will search for and collect a variety of species. They will also learn how to pin and curate an insect collection.

“We last held this event in person in 2019 and we are so excited to bring it back,” Lowenstein said. “After our courses, participants have shared that they were excited to learn about displays and the variety of local insect species here in Macomb. They also indicated that they would keep collections for personal interest or use as educational tools in the classroom and for other science programs. So it really is a special event – people get a lot out of it.”
