On Saturday, May 14, Letter Carriers in Macomb County and throughout the country conducted the largest one-day food drive in the world. Since its inception in 1993, almost 2 billion pounds of non-perishable food has been collected to help restock the shelves of food banks, soup kitchens and pantries throughout America and here in Macomb County. The donated food helps provide emergency food boxes and meals to families and individuals struggling with food insecurity.
This year, Macomb County Letter Carriers collected 208,707 pounds of food. Of that total, the Macomb Food Program received 143,655 pounds. The canned beef stew, boxes of cereal, chicken noodle soup and hundreds of other food items will help feed families, frail senior citizens on fixed incomes, disabled veterans, the unemployed and underemployed, and homeless individuals.
“The Macomb Food Program is very grateful to all the employees and volunteers at the Postal Service who helped make this food drive an overwhelming success,” said Shannon Mallory, program manager, the Macomb Food Program. “A special thanks to the National Association of Letters Carriers’ members who worked tirelessly picking up the donated food as they delivered mail along their routes. The Macomb Food Program is also especially thankful to everyone in Macomb County who so generously placed non-perishable food items by their mailbox. Your generosity helps thousands of people in need of food right here in our community.”
