Macomb County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Feb 16.

9-1-1 may not be available due to your cell phone carrier.

We just wanted to share some important information with you regarding your cell phone carrier and the ability to call 9-1-1.  Many wireless providers are decommissioning their 3G networks, and transitioning to 5G.  This is being done to make room for more robust networks.

This change may make it to where older phones won’t be able to make/receive calls; including 9-1-1. The FCC has not identified a compliance date for completion yet, but the big four providers have already started the process and their target completion dates are as follows:

Sprint – January 2022 (this was their target, but they are not complete).  They will begin to decommission their LTE network in June 2022.

AT&T – February  2022

Verizon – December 2022

T-Mobile – July 1, 2022

All other providers will begin the process in 2023.  If you are interested in more information, please contact your provider or visit https://www.fcc.gov/.../plan-ahead-phase-out-3g-cellular..
