Utica Community Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 4.

While many UCS students and staff have returned to in-person learning this school year, some staff and families have chosen to enroll in the UCS Virtual Academy. This option gives students the opportunity to receive the same high quality education familiar to UCS families in a fully online setting.

One teacher that chose to remain teaching virtually is fourth grade Virtual Academy teacher, Edward Fromm, who believes bringing some excitement to each day is important for his students.

“Our main focus is always covering the curriculum by utilizing district provided tools, but I also provide a variety of other sources to make learning fun, enjoyable and challenging,” said Fromm.

Thanks to the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD), Fromm’s students will benefit from 14 virtual field trips. So far, they have met authors Jonathan Rand and Lisa Rivard and virtually visited both the Troy Nature Center and the Buffalo Zoo.

“It is a different voice, an expert in the field, a break in our day, and the best way I know how to bring certain topics to life,” said Fromm. “My students love them!”

Now in his 29th year of teaching, Fromm says he never thought he would opt into teaching virtually.

“Altering my teaching to deliver the curriculum and make it something that kids want to do is my challenge on a daily basis,” Fromm said.

“The biggest compliment that I have gotten this year is knowing that one of my kids stayed virtual when their two siblings went back for in-person learning at the start of the semester,” Fromm said.

“As a new virtual teacher, it made me think, ‘I must be doing something right.’”
