Bemis Junior High School issued the following announcement on Nov 9.
After practicing karate for over four years, Bemis Junior High eighth grader, Dania Crnkic, has developed a passion for the sport.
“I love competing, meeting new friends and winning big trophies,” said Dania.
Not only has she won big trophies, but she has been awarded big titles, as well. Last month, Dania won first place in continuous sparring (commonly known as kickboxing) at the World Karate Commission’s World Championships, making her the world champion.
Dania trains between five to seven days each week at Macomb Martial Arts. When she’s not training, she remains involved by helping her coaches train younger students.
“The little kids look up to her and see her as her mentor,” said Dania’s mom, Alma Crnkic.
Initially signing Dania up for karate as a way to learn self defense and earn self esteem, Alma is amazed at the athlete Dania has grown into through the sport.
“We are extremely proud of the accomplishments she has made in these past few years,” Alma said.
Starting in local tournaments, Dania worked her way up to win regional, state and national championships before garnering the 2021 world championship title.
“It feels amazing to be world champion,” said Dania. “I put a lot of hard work into what I do and I have managed to achieve an amazing outcome.”
