A temporary halt to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits is set to begin on Saturday as a result of the ongoing federal government shutdown. This development will affect more than 1.4 million people in Michigan, representing nearly one in eight households who rely on SNAP to afford basic groceries.
Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan has announced that its food pantries and soup kitchens are preparing for an expected increase in demand across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. The organization stated it will need additional community support to address the growing need.
The organization highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that donations made at this time will be matched up to $20,000 by an anonymous donor. According to Catholic Charities, "Your gift today will be DOUBLED up to $20,000, thanks to an anonymous matching donor. That means your $50 becomes $100 — and feeds twice as many neighbors in need."
Catholic Charities emphasized its commitment to ensuring families do not go hungry during this period of uncertainty: "Now, more than ever, we are called to act. Together, we can answer that call and ensure no family goes hungry."
The organization noted that all donations will directly support its food assistance programs serving Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties.
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you invited me in." — Matthew 25:35
