State Representative Ron Robinson (R-Utica) has announced that $2.5 million in state funding has been secured for the Oakland Macomb Interceptor Drain Drainage District. The funds will be used to build an odor and corrosion control facility in Sterling Heights, addressing long-standing complaints about sewer odors near 15 Mile Road and the ITC corridor.
Robinson played a key role in ensuring the appropriation was included in the latest state budget. He stated, “For far too long, residents, businesses, and the community in this area have been affected by the unacceptable odor issues caused by this infrastructure. This funding is a direct investment in public health, infrastructure preservation, and quality of life.”
The project aims to design and construct an advanced odor control facility at a critical point within the regional sewer system. The new facility is expected to reduce hydrogen sulfide gas emissions that contribute to pipe damage and persistent odors affecting neighborhoods, local parks, businesses, as well as institutions such as the Sterling Heights Fire Department and Sterling Heights High School.
Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller expressed gratitude for Robinson’s efforts. “Rep. Ron Robinson heard the concerns of his constituents, has delivered on his promise to address their concerns, and we appreciate his efforts,” Miller said. “This $2.5 million appropriation will be used to construct an odor control facility to address sewer odor issues that have plagued residents for decades.”
Robinson added, “This is a great example of how listening to the community and working together at all levels of government can lead to real, tangible improvements. I’m proud to have delivered on a commitment to improve quality of life for families and businesses in our area. This project will bring cleaner air, stronger infrastructure, and a better future for Macomb County.”
