State Representative Tom Kuhn (R–Troy) has announced that $300,000 has been included in Michigan’s finalized state budget to support a new initiative aimed at improving public safety and leadership education for Hindu and Jain houses of worship. The funding will be directed to the Hindu Community Relations Council of Michigan, which is based in Troy.

“This initiative is about protecting the rights and safety of Michigan residents as they gather in worship and service,” said Kuhn. “With over 40 temples across the state serving tens of thousands of worshippers, it’s vital that we support faith communities with the tools and training they need to stay safe, prepared, and connected to local law enforcement. I’m honored to have led this proposal and to support the Hindu and Jain communities in Troy, Sterling Heights, and across Michigan.”

The allocated funds will support a statewide program focused on public safety, emergency preparedness, and leadership development for religious leaders and volunteers. The program aims to help temples enhance their security measures, improve collaboration with law enforcement and emergency personnel, and offer leadership training to strengthen internal governance and community outreach.

The Hindu Community Relations Council of Michigan will oversee the rollout of this program throughout the state by working with temples and religious centers to assess their needs before delivering relevant training and resources.
