On a day when only two COVID-19-related deaths were reported, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order closing indoor service at bars and limiting indoor gatherings to 10 people.
The order went into effect July 31.
As of July 29, Michigan had 231 coronavirus-related deaths in July, according to The New York Times database. In comparison, the state saw 232 coronavirus-related deaths on one day in April. So far in July, Michigan has averaged eight coronavirus deaths per day, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.
As of July 27, there are 670 people hospitalized in the state for COVID-19. That number is down significantly from April's 3,357 coronavirus patients. The bed occupancy rate seems to have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
"As we see COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Michiganders cannot afford to drop our guard," Whitmer said, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. "We must take every step possible to save lives, protect the brave men and women on the front lines, and avoid overwhelming our health care system while we continue to combat COVID-19."
“After seeing a resurgence in cases connected to social gatherings across the state, we must further limit gatherings for the health of our community and economy. By taking these strong actions, we will be better positioned to get our children back into classrooms and avoid a potentially devastating second wave," she said, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.
