The City of Sterling Heights is seeking mural artists to design and install a large outdoor mural at its new pickleball facility. The project aims to expand the city’s public art collection, which has included murals since 2018 with guidance from the Sterling Heights Arts Commission.

Artists are invited to submit their concepts for a mural that will cover an exterior wall measuring about 185 feet wide by 20 feet high. The design should incorporate three downspouts on the wall. The city encourages submissions inspired by “Greetings from…” style murals, commonly seen in other communities as postcard-like tributes to local pride and landmarks.

Submissions must include a one-page narrative describing the concept, scale, materials, and colors; a visual representation such as an illustration or digital rendering; installation details; a resume with past public art experience; and up to three references. Artists must be at least 18 years old. The maximum budget for the project is $30,000, covering all costs including design, labor, materials, equipment, and surface preparation.

Proposals can be sent by email or mail to the City’s Community Relations office. The deadline for submission is 4 p.m., Friday, March 20, 2026. For questions regarding the project or submission process, interested parties are directed to contact Melanie Davis, Community Relations Director.

Sterling Heights promotes heritage awareness through cultural programs and maintains facilities such as city hall while preserving historical sites like the Upton House built in the mid-19th century. More information about these initiatives can be found on the official website. The city operates under a council-manager government structure and offers community resources including libraries and parks.

The city has emphasized its commitment to fostering creativity in public spaces: “This newest project will add another vibrant work of art to the city while enhancing one of its newest recreational destinations.”
