State Representative Ron Robinson from Utica has put forward a legislative proposal to exempt Michigan veterans from paying fees related to obtaining a Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This initiative seeks to waive the costs associated with licensing and fingerprinting for veterans who have been honorably discharged.
“As chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military and Veterans Affairs, and a veteran myself, I have spent the term engaging with fellow local veterans’ groups and retired servicemembers across Michigan,” Robinson stated. “They have expressed to me that they already undergone extensive firearms training in service to our country. They carried firearms in defense of our freedom. It’s unnecessary, and frankly wrong, to charge them to carry lawfully in retirement.”
The proposed bill intends to remove financial obstacles for veterans by acknowledging their previous service and training. It emphasizes the skills and responsibilities that veterans continue to uphold after their military careers.
“Veterans are responsible, trained individuals with a deep commitment to protecting those around them,” Robinson remarked. “The spirit of duty doesn’t stop when the uniform comes off. My goal with this bill is to cut the red tape and let veterans keep doing what they do best: protecting our communities.”
