State Representative Ron Robinson announced on Apr. 29 the creation of the Michigan Building Trades Caucus, a bipartisan and bicameral group dedicated to supporting Michigan’s skilled trades workforce and increasing opportunities for future workers. Robinson will chair the caucus, with Representative Joey Andrews and Senator Ed McBroom serving as vice chairs.

The formation of this caucus aims to address challenges facing Michigan’s workforce, particularly in skilled trades that are essential for economic growth and community development. The initiative comes at a time when state leaders are looking for ways to strengthen career pathways and retain talent within Michigan.

“Skilled trades are the backbone of Michigan’s economy and our communities,” said Robinson (R-Utica). “This caucus is about bringing people together to support commonsense policies, expand opportunities for workers, and make sure the next generation has a clear path to good-paying, in-demand careers.”

Robinson also addressed housing concerns in the state. “Michigan is facing a serious housing shortage, and the reality is that homes don’t get built without skilled tradesmen,” he said. “If we want to increase housing supply and bring down costs, we have to prioritize investment in career and technical education and apprenticeship programs that train the next generation of builders and trades professionals.”

The caucus will serve as a forum for lawmakers from both chambers as well as industry leaders to collaborate on strengthening education programs related to skilled trades, expanding apprenticeships, and addressing workforce shortages impacting sectors such as housing construction and infrastructure projects across Michigan.

“Supporting our young people and developing homegrown talent is one of the smartest investments we can make,” Robinson said. “Career and technical education creates pathways to stable, well-paying careers without leaving students with massive debt payments. These programs give people the opportunity to buy a home, raise a family, and build their future right here in Michigan.”

Membership includes numerous representatives such as Greg Alexander, Joe Aragona, Matt Bierlein among others; senators include Mark Huizenga alongside Vice Chair Ed McBroom.
