The Michigan House of Representatives has passed a resolution introduced by state Representative Josh Schriver, encouraging local law enforcement agencies to enter into 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This initiative is intended to enhance cooperation between state and federal authorities in removing individuals who are illegally present in the country and pose threats to communities in Michigan.
House Resolution 128 advocates for increased participation in the federal 287(g) program. This program allows local officers to perform immigration law enforcement duties under ICE supervision, such as identifying and processing criminal aliens and gang members for removal.
Representative Schriver stated that the resolution sends a clear message against sanctuary-style obstruction, emphasizing support for law-abiding citizens. “This is about making sure we all play our part — state by state — in achieving what the federal government was elected to do: enforce our borders and remove dangerous individuals who are here illegally,” Schriver said. “Our communities deserve the full protection of the law, and this resolution is a necessary step to help deliver it.”
Participation in the 287(g) program remains voluntary for local agencies. The resolution cites departments like the City of Taylor Police as examples of successful collaboration through existing 287(g) Task Force Model agreements.
